Incorporation: A Touch of Punk

Every so often I think we all get an itch to rebel. I've been searching for a way to incorporate this rebel look into an everyday wardrobe and I think I have found the cure. Let's head back to where it began. Punk started to show up in the mid-70s and lived a long life throughout the 80's. It hit cities in the U.S. and the U.K. which is where it was noticed the most. New York City, London, and England is where we most associate the movement with. The music scene that we associate with punk started out in New York, the fashion, however, started in England with it's roots coming from the poor economy of the time. The beginning of Punk fashion can partly be due to Malcolm Mclaren who opened his shop SEX. Here punk fashions could be purchased and helped kick start the movement.
For us it's a little to much work to produce a Mohawk and a full face of makeup before leaving the house every morning so let's simplify this for an everyday look. I purchased a pack of studs online and simply placed them in 2 rows of 3, followed by 1 row of 2, and 1 row of 1. These were placed on the collar of a denim button up that I purchased at a thrift store. This doesn't have to cost you money, I may have spent $5.00 on the project. The studs can also be placed on the elbows, cuffs, buttons, there is an endless amount of opportunities to create this look. Just keep in mind to incorporate current trends such as the denim button up which has been going strong for the last few seasons.

History Lesson: A Helping Hand in Where it Began

In the film Worried About the Boy, BBC shows an interpretation of Boy George's life post Culture Club. It starts out with a young George in high school being asked his ambitions and cuts to a scene of his father picking him up from jail for shop lifting a dress. It shows the trials and triumphs of a young individual in the 80's who is destined to make a name for himself. The clip above shows the first few minutes of the film, the rest can be bought or found online to watch.

History Lesson: Paris is Burning

Paris Is Burning from Billy Blaze on Vimeo.

One of my favorite documentaries is the film Paris is Burning. It was shot in the late 80s / early 90s and talks about the different fashion houses in New York City and the lives that they lived. Take a minute and save the link to the video above so you can check it out when you have the time.

Documentation: Elmwood Cemetery

Sunday is lay around the house day and when your house happens to be a tiny 500 sq ft. and packed with 8 people you need some fresh air. We managed to put ourselves together and head out around 5:30p.m. with barley any day light left. But I think we prefer it that way.

Incorporation: A touch of the 80's & 90's

Incorporating the 80's and 90's look into your everyday wardrobe is simple. Depending on how daring you are or how fashion forward there are many ways for this to be done. Keep in mind fashion trends are recycled, with this said even if the clothing is 20 or so years old it doesn't mean it isn't in style. For example the button up you see above is a piece I have for sale on my etsy.com account, it can be thrown over a tank and jeans, cotton dress, or however you would like. Taking one piece of clothing from the past and pairing with your current wardrobe is all that it takes. Good luck!

Documentation: Midas & an Explanation of Saturday Nights

Halloween was interesting here as I'm sure you can imagine. My apartment had costumes from Cruella DeVil and Queen Midas to youtube personalities. But I should give you the background and fill you in.
Every saturday night here in Charlotte we attend Club Marigny in our finest most outrageous attire. We are all students or in other words we have no money, but it doesn't take money to look good it takes creativity. From wrapping ourselves in fabric and face paints to scavenging the thrift stores we find or make unique pieces and go out. We spend hours getting dressed it's part of the fun, and who wants to do all of this work with out showing it off?

(Pictured above is an old military hat picked up from a thrift store, and spray painted gold. I then bought a black masquerade mask sprayed it gold, used a spray adhesive and pored gold glitter on the mask and randomly onto the hat. The shoes were also spray painted and glittered to match. These two items are from the Queen Midas outfit.)
